Jean-Marie Appriou

Jean-Marie Appriou’s sculptures evoke archaic forms and are inspired by contemporary but also mythological and futuristic worlds. Whether working in metal or glass, Appriou constantly furthers the potential of his source material through experimental production techniques or even by bringing the two together. By alluding to familiar forms, be they animal or human, and developing his unique, almost alchemical approach to material, Appriou has created his very own mythology.

Jean-Marie Appriou was born in 1986 in Brest, FR, and lives and works in Paris, FR. Appriou graduated from École régionale des beaux-arts de Rennes, FR, in 2010. Recent institutional solo and two-person exhibitions include Surface Horizon, with Marguerite Humeau, Lafayette Anticipations, Paris, FR (2021); The Horses, organized by Public Art Fund, Doris C. Freedman Plaza, New York, NY, US (2019–2020); Seabed, Le Consortium, Dijon, FR (2019–2020); and Open Space #1, Fondation Louis Vuitton, Paris, FR (2018). Appriou has been featured in group exhibitions at institutions including Palais de Tokyo, Paris, FR (2018); Centre d’art Contemporain, Brest, FR (2018); Château de Versailles, Versailles, FR (2017); Vienna Biennale, Vienna, AT (2017); Musée d’Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris, Paris, FR (2017); and Astrup Fearnley Museum of Modern Art, Oslo, NO (2014).

Sam Falls

Concerned with the intimacy of time, the illustration of place, and the exploration of mortality, Sam Falls has created his own formal language by intertwining photography’s core parameters of time and exposure with nature and her elements. Working largely outdoors with vernacular materials and nature as a site-specific subject, Falls abandons mechanical reproduction in favor of a more symbiotic relationship between subject and object. In doing so, he bridges the gap between photography, sculpture, and painting, as well as the divide between artist, object, and viewer.

Sam Falls was born in 1984 in San Diego, CA, US. He lives and works in Los Angeles, CA, US, and New York, NY, US. He received his BA from Reed College, Portland, OR, US (2007) and his MFA from ICP-Bard, New York, NY, US (2010). In 2022, Falls will be the subject of a solo exhibition at MOCA Cleveland, Cleveland, OH, US. Shara Hughes

Shara Hughes refers to her paintings and drawings as psychological or invented landscapes, a term that derives from her working process and describes the way her paintings are created only in the very moment of painting. Hughes states that during painting, her works are created purely from the inside; this inside, however, is strongly informed by a deep knowledge of art history as well as the work of contemporary peers, as her frenetic colors and vibrant brushstrokes, encompassing everything from monochromatic fields to harsh lines and dots, show. 

Shara Hughes was born in 1981 in Atlanta, GA, US, and lives and works in Brooklyn, NY, US. She graduated from the Rhode Island School of Design and later attended the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture. In September 2021, Hughes will open her first major solo museum exhibition in the United States at Contemporary Art Museum St.Louis, St. Louis, MO, US; and a major solo presentation at the Yuz Museum, Shanghai, CN, is planned for November. Hughes was recently the subject of solo exhibitions at institutions including the Garden Museum, London, UK (2021); Le Consortium, Dijon, FR (2021); the Newport Art Museum, Newport, RI, US (2018); Gallery Met at the Metropolitan Opera, New York, NY, US (2018); and the Museum of Contemporary Art of Georgia, Atlanta, GA, US (2014). Hughes participated in the 2017 Whitney Biennial at the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York, NY, US.
